Zen Philosophy of Mindfulness: Nen 念 according to Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō

The purpose of this paper is to holistically comprehend the concept nen 念 in Zen philosophy Dōgen (道元 1200–1253), which one origins Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, relation his principal concepts. This article specifically investigates its usages masterpiece, Treasury True Dharma Eye (Shōbōgenzō 正法眼蔵), according each step threefold wisdom (san-e 三慧); for mindfulness a common thread among them and he presents “monshishū-shō 聞思修證”, shō 證 stands “awakening”. It revealed that considers “study” (mon 聞) “reflection” (shi 思) be essential on Buddhist path, as well “practice” (shū 修), Dōgen’s self beyond sense body-mind or time, can attained after long cultivation. Also, connections critical concepts such “just sitting” (shikan taza 祇管打坐), “dropping off body-mind” (shinjin datsuraku 身心脱落), “oneness practice awakening” (shūshō ittō 修證一等) are elucidated.
